Short course on Higher Education Academic Success (HEAS)
This is the University Academic Success course. Therefore, it aims at aiding students’ skills to adapt to academic challenges they might face or they are facing at university. The course will develop students’ personal growth, social-emotional skills (SES), ICT skills, essential study skills, and Learning skills which are important for university academic excellence. Other skills expected to be discussed are career choices and career development. The course does not provide a qualification to enable students to join university but it is for aspiring, admitted (freshman) and continuing university students for their academic success. The main goal is academic excellence in university education.
In addition to that, the skills acquired will help students to excel in their careers or life after accomplishing their university program well.
The report regarding academic performance in Tanzania Universities indicates success and some challenges. The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) reports below standard academic performance as the major reason for undergraduate students’ dropout. For example, TCU (2020) indicated that out of 6,654 dropouts, 4173(63%) dropped due to below standard academic performance. Some research shows that the major concerns of the university students, especially first year students, are: time management, study skills, and adjusting to the rigors of college life. This course aims to address these challenges and allow them to excel in their university education.
The course has been planned to equip learners with knowledge, skills, and attitudes of learning to
achieve excellence in university academics. The course will, therefore:
1. Equip participants with the social-emotional skills necessary for achieving university academic excellence.
