Tanzania (NBC) Premier League

The Tanzania (NBC) Premier League is the highest level of football in Tanzania. It is a 10-team league that was formed in 1999 and comprises two divisions, with each division holding 5 teams. The teams compete for the title and to avoid relegation each year.

The league has been dominated by Azam FC since its inception and has never had any other team win it more than once before or since Azam’s initial win at the start of this century.

The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), previously Football Association of Tanzania (FAT), is the governing body of football in Tanzania and oversees the Tanzania national football teams. It was founded in 1930 and is affiliated to FIFA since 1964.

The Federation was founded in 1930 as Tanganyika Football Association (TFA). It was later renamed as Football Association of Tanzania (FAT) in 1971 after major amendments in its Constitution. FAT existed until 2004 when the new name TFF came into force after the body’s General Assembly held on 27th December of the same year.

The Current TFF Constitution came into force 15th January 2006 following the General Assembly held in Dar es Salaam on 14th and 15th January 2006. Currently, Wallace Karia is the President of Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), succeeding to Jamal Malinzi in August 2017.

Young Africans Sports Club is a football club based in Jangwani, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Founded in 1935, the club play their home games at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The club has won 27 league titles and four domestic cups, and have participated in multiple CAF Champions League editions. They are also one of the biggest clubs in East Africa, having won the CECAFA Club Championship five times.
The club was popular among Africans, and became a symbol of the anti-colonial movement. Young Africans became associated with nationalists and freedom fighters, and inspired the political party TANU to adopt yellow and green as their primary colours.

Azam

As a football club, Azam is one of the most successful in Tanzania. The club has won the Tanzanian Premier League once, in the 1996–97 season. They are also four-time winners of the Tanzanian Cup (1994–95, 2001–02, 2009–10 and 2010–11) and one-time runners-up for two seasons (1996–97 and 2010). The club’s most recent achievement was winning 2015 Uhuru Cup.

Azam play their home games at Uhuru Stadium.

Simba SC

They’ve won nine domestic titles and are one of Tanzania’s most successful clubs, with their best finish coming in 1974 when they were runner-up to Azam FC. Currently, they’re reigning champions of both Tanzania and CECAFA Club Champions Cup after winning those respective competitions last year.

Mwadui FC

Mwadui FC is a Tanzanian football club based in Mwadui, Singida Region. The club currently competes in the Tanzanian Premier League, the top-flight of Tanzanian football.

The club was founded in 2001 by the Mwadui Sugar Company and played their home games at Mjini Stadium for their first five years of existence before moving to Tarime Municipal Stadium for their remaining seasons prior to moving back home where they currently play their games at New Mvumi Sports Ground which has been named after them due to sponsorship agreements with Local Businesses such as Vodacom Tanzania,

Mtibwa Sugar FC is a Tanzanian football club based in Mtwara.

Mtibwa Sugar FC was founded in 2006 as Mtwara United Football Club and started competing in the top flight of Tanzanian football, the Tanzanian Premier League, after acquiring a football team which played under that name. In 2009 they changed their name to Mtibwa Sugar FC.

JKT Tanzania

JKT (short for Julius Kipng’etich’s Taifa) is a Tanzanian football club based in Dar es Salaam. The team was founded in 1964 and currently plays at the National Stadium, which has a capacity of 30,000. JKT won their first league title in 2012 after beating Azam FC by three points, while they have also won one cup final during their history.

Mbeya City FC is a football club based in Mbeya, Tanzania. The club was founded in 2016 and currently plays in the Tanzania Premier League. The club is owned by the City of Mbeya and is one of the most popular football clubs in Tanzania. They play their home games at the Nyerere Stadium which has a capacity of 10,000 people and they have won 7 league titles so far.

Polisi Tanzania

The only team to have won the league twice is Polisi Tanzania, who picked up the trophy in 1998 and 1999. The majority of their players are Tanzanian, but they also have some South African players on their roster.

The club plays its home matches at Bukhungu Stadium in Dar es Salaam, which was built in 1956 and has a capacity of 15,000 people.

Kagera Sugar FC is a Tanzanian football club based in Kagera. They play in the Tanzania Premier League. The club was founded in 1965. The team has won the Tanzanian Premier League title four times, which is more than any other team from Kagera Region has been able to achieve. They were also runners-up twice, third place finishers two times and fourth place finishers once during this period of their history (1965–2017).
